Tarnanthi - Too Deadly: Yirr.

Discovering the first solo exhibition of Janette Murrungun at Fabrik Arts + Heritage Gallery marked an important moment in her artistic journey. Janette Murrungun is an experienced weaver who works with ghost net material and pandanus, and whose Country is Gulurrj (Rocky Point).

She holds deep knowledge of plant use for string-making, natural dyeing, and traditional weaving a skills passed down from her mother and grandmother. For this exhibition, she wove colourful yirr (string bags) using handspun natural fibres and nylon retrieved from ghost nets that wash up near her community of Numbulwar, on the Gulf of Carpentaria in southeastern Arnhem Land.

Women across Arnhem Land have traditionally used yirr as an all-purpose carrier bag, ideal for holding seafood, shellfish, roots, and bush food.
