Culture and courage - a long journey from home

Our master weaver Janette Murrungun and her granddaughter Shania Wurramara travelled to Europe - a landmark opportunity to promote the art of our region, reclaim cultural heritage, and forge new pathways for our Art Centre. Supporting them on this journey is Dr Louise Hamby, an Arnhem Land weaving expert and long-time collaborator.

During their journey,

  • They shared their story and art with an international audience at a major conference in Switzerland.

  • They taught weaving to European audiences at Fondation Opale in Switzerland, sharing knowledge and culture firsthand.

  • They also saw and held pieces of their history at the Wereldmuseum in the Netherlands - artefacts made by their ancestors, many of which hadn’t been seen in Numbulwar for over a century.

  • They Build meaningful connections with galleries and institutions to create new opportunities for Numbulwar artists.

This was a historic moment for Numbulwar. For the first time, our artists were invited to engage with their ancestral artworks in international collections - reclaiming knowledge, strengthen cultural connections, and ensuring the future of Numburindi weaving remains strong for generations to come.
