Numbulwar Numburindi Artists Nathaniah Murrungun, Janette Murrungun, Yulki Nunggumajbarr, Karishama Wilfred, Rose Wilfred, Virginia Wilfred were featured in Threads: Lore and Lineage, presented in partnership with the National Indigenous Art Fair and the Australian Design Centre.

Tradition and contemporary practice are intricately woven together, much like threads in a tapestry. Ghost net traps, created using ancestral weaving techniques, reflects a deep connection between land, sea, and community. By using salvaged materials, these works also respond to the environmental impact of discarded commercial fishing nets polluting the oceans.

Weavings, lino-printed fabrics, and dillybags are displayed alongside carved sculptures and ceramics. Each piece carries story, A trace of cultural lineage, Indigenous lore and identity.

These works are more than objects; they are acts of cultural continuity. They embody ecological knowledge and spiritual traditions passed down through generations. From the pandanus weavings of Injalak Arts to the fibre art from Maningrida, the diversity of materials and technique reflect the richness of Australia’s Indigenous cultures.

The National Indigenous Art Fair was held at the Overseas Passenger Terminal from 5-6 July 2025, bringing together artists and communities from across Australia.
