Karishama loves sting rays - their movements, their presence in the billabongs. On one of her bush trips, she came across an old bird trap hidden among the trees. Seeing it, she had an idea: to transform it into something poetic and beautiful. By upcycling the trap, she turned a tool once used to capture into a work of art that celebrates nature.
The piece holds a quiet paradox—the bird would be caught inside a cage that looks and feels like its natural home. By mixing ghost nets, natural and dyed pandanus and cotton strings, she could feature this beautiful sculpture. The soft bush colours reflect the land, while the touches of blue recall the sky where birds soar free. Inspired by the nests she sees high in the trees and the calls she hears while harvesting, Virginia's work invites us to reflect on beauty, freedom, and our connection to Country.
