Sun Mat by Joy Wilfred

A$875.50

“Part of the exhibition “LA+003 | Malima + Numbulwar" This artwork is to be collected at LaPerouse Museum, Sydney in February 2027."

Our mats are woven in circles, shaped like the sun. Made from pandanus, they carry the memory of both ceremony and everyday life, now unfolding as works of art and quiet symbols of connection.

Each piece begins at the centre - a small point - and slowly grows outward, circle by circle, like ripples on water or the steady rhythm of breath. In daylight, they hold the warmth and presence of the sun; by night, they become the moon, holding its softness and mystery.

Each artist weaves in her own way. Some pull the fibres tight, creating a surface that feels strong and full, while others leave space for light and air to move through. Natural dyes and strands of ghost net bring shifting tones - earth, sea, and sky meeting within the weave.

Every sun mat carries more than skill. It holds a story, a gesture, a moment in time - a reflection of the artist, her Country, and the knowledge passed through her hands.

Materials: Gunga (Pandanus Spiralis) and natural dyes
Dimensions: 65 cm
Cat no: 386-26
